How Can A Belief in Jesus Christ Help Me?

Faith, or a belief, in Jesus Christ gives purpose to our lives: “Our purpose in this life is to have joy and prepare to return to God’s presence.” (A Guide to Missionary Service – Preach My Gospel, pg. 50)  We do this by following Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ is our great Exemplar.  His words and actions teach us how to have happy, productive lives.  As we learn and keep His commandments, we become more like Him and prepare to return to God’s presence and enjoy eternal happiness.  “One cannot study about Jesus Christ and His teachings without being affected and changed for good.  As you develop a testimony of the Savior, you want to become like Him and to follow Him.” (Ronald T. Halverson, Ensign, Nov. ’04, 33)

Did God create us “to become more like Him or for our eternal happiness, defined as eternal increase?”  Or did He create us “by Him and for Him?” (Col 1:16)
Being created for God’s pleasure does not mean humanity was made to entertain God or provide Him with amusement. God is a creative Being, and it gives Him pleasure to create. God is a personal Being, and it gives Him pleasure to have other beings He can have a genuine relationship with.  God created us for His pleasure and so that we, as His creation, would have the pleasure of knowing Him.

  2. How have you found this to be true in your life ? From Paul , our best example of what a servant must do and what an  individual must become to receive exaltation.
    Example of the believers
    Be born again
    First principales and ordinance
    Grew in wisdom

    Surasak,

Good question.  It’s easy to look back at my life and see that I am a much better person now than even a few years ago because of my beliefs.  However, being able to put something in words is a little more difficult.  I think the easiest thing to do would be to share a recent example.

I have three children: a 4-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl, and a newborn.  We’ve been working really hard to get our 4-year-old to quit teasing and wrestling his sister.  We keep telling him that we are a family, and we need to help each other be happy.  As I’ve tried to help him understand what it means to be part of a family, I’ve gained a better understanding of what it means to be part of God’s family (1 John 3:1)  Now when I look at people, I see them differently.  I may not know them, but I now they are part of God’s family (my family) and that God loves them.  I now better realize my responsibility in God’s family to help my family succeed in being happy together.
