mary, that's just their uniform. It was chosen to make them look respectable and clean, and also as a way for people to easily recognize them. Suit coats may be optional for warmer climates, but they are expected to wear white shirts and ties everywhere in public, aside from playing an occasional soccer game.

What other questions do you have about missionaries?

Kate, Good question. It seems harmless enough to just spend time hanging out, but they don't. Their schedules are usually packed full of gospel-sharing activities. Besides that, even if they could hang out for just an evening and have fun, I don't think they would be able to keep from talking about their faith. It sort of becomes part of you when you are a missionary.

That said, they do have like sports nights and movie nights and other things where they socialize with people who want to come. I served my mission in Russia and we had lots of time to make friendships in those ways--sports nights, english classes, church-activities. Everyone is welcome to come to those. I don't really know how it is in the states though.

are missionaries allowed to meet guys at their same age (who are linving in the cities where the missionaries are serving)just for having fun together (without speaking about their faith at all)? Or do they have to work for their church 24 hours a day?

One thing to emphasize: missionaries are not robots. They are people that like the same kinds of things you do. Motocross, skiing, history, high-tech gadgets, etc. Get to know them and you'll see their personalities apart from just their button-down white shirts and ties.
